For the past few years Scoil Mhuire Community School under their teacher Sinead Cullen have entered Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture with great success. This year however they have reached dazzling heights, with Dragon Sceal winning the East Region in the Grand Final in the 3Arena on April 19th.

The competition challenges students to create a wearable outfit from entirely recycled materials. This experimentation and design process is completely new to these students and the outfits produced this year are jaw dropping. There were 8 outfits submitted from Scoil Mhuire C.S. this year. Three outfits; Dragon Sceal, Try Stop Us and The High Road successfully progressed to the Regional Final and showcased their outfits on the catwalk in March in The Helix, Dublin. This was a fantastic night and the students put on an amazing show. Dragon Sceal was chosen as one of the finalists lucky enough to proceed to the Grand Final in the 3Arena.

Dragon Sceal, a huge metallic dragon outfit was designed and constructed by Jamie Yap, Alix Weld and Shauna O Rourke. The team worked tirelessly all year putting in hundreds of hours of work both in school and at home. Jamie’s heritage was the starting point and inspiration for the outfit. Jamie’s Father is Chinese and his Mother is Irish. As the family owns a Chinese takeaway this is where most of the materials came from. The outfit is made from recycled takeaway menus and a variety of cardboard and plastics. The dragons and costumes in the TV series Game of Thrones also inspired the team.

Dragon Sceal, performed at the Grand Final, which was held in the 3Arena to a sold out crowd of 6,000 on the 19th of April. The atmosphere was electric. A bus of 60 supporters from the school attended the show to cheer Jamie on. Dragon Sceal was crowned the East winner. This is an unbelievable achievement as there were 1,500 entries to the competition this year. Jamie modeled Dragon Sceal and was interviewed on The Ray Darcy Show on Saturday 21st of April. As East winners the team received a trophy for their school and a trip to the Cannes Film Festival in May along with their teacher Sinead Cullen. The team will showcase their design on an international stage on the Red Carpet.
