Every year, more than 50,000 young people in Ireland move from primary to post-primary education. What helps them to settle into their new school? What enables them to do well? To find answers to these questions, researchers from the Economic and Social Research Institute began a study of over 900 students in their first three years of post-primary school. The story of their first year is now complete.
This booklet summarises the main findings of the research and suggests ways in which schools and teachers can support students during this important time in their education. It also provides useful information for parents whose children have just begun, or are about to begin, post-primary school.
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and incoming First Years
We would like to extend a warm welcome to all the students who will begin their secondary school journey at Scoil Mhuire this Friday. The transition from primary to secondary school is a big one, and there may be some nerves or uncertainty. This is all completely natural, and we have no doubt that after a few days, all students will have settled in. To aid in the transition, each student will have a Sixth Year mentor, who will provide advice and support.
We look forward to seeing all students on Friday morning.
Remember there is no need to bring any textbooks, just a pen and notepad.
...Well done to all our Leaving Cert students and we wish you all success in your future college and career applications. Whatever your achievement in your Leaving Cert let it spur you on to great things!
Well done also and thank you to all the teachers and the student families for all their help and support.
I would like to acknowledge all the efforts of staff and students in making this another successful year in Scoil Mhuire and wish all our exam students every success in the upcoming examinations and in the next phase of their lives and hope they reap the rewards of all their hard work . Mr. Nolan, Principal.
The school year came to an end on Friday 2nd June. The administration office remains open should you have any queries (Ph. 045 868121). Enjoy the Summer Holidays!

The Religion department continues to foster and encourage an active awareness of social justice in Sixth Year. The day Fr Peter McVerry visited generated an immense impact on the majority of our students. The impact was so strong that the group decided that they should give something back. It was decided that the students would be asked to contribute towards helping some homeless people to pay for a hostel for a few nights around Christmas. The cost per night is about €5, a total of €550 was collected. It was then agreed to put some money into Christmas cards to be given to some homeless. We are so lucky to have a very talented card designer in our group. Sarah Beegan indicated that she was willing to make homemade cards instead of those mass produced. Regardless of the amount of work involved it was decided that it would be much more personal to make our own. Sarah donated all the materials and a production line was established to manufacture a large amount of cards. Each card had a hand written message from our year group.
On the 20th December a representative group travelled to Dublin. The students were Harry Kelly, Colm O’Sullivan, Emily Kinsella, Eva O’Connell, Muireann Healy, Stephen Duffy, Sarah Beegan and Robbie Walsh. After an inspiring talk Fr. McVerry brought us to the Youth Café on Berkeley Street. There was a Christmas themed morning open to any homeless person to drop in and have breakfast, warmth and company. We spoke to many homeless people as the students presented them with the cards. The level of appreciation shown by these people will live long in our memories. The school community were so proud of the happiness that all our Sixth Year students brought to these people, even if only for a brief time. Well done to all!

Congratulations to 5th Year Cast, Crew and Teachers on a wonderful production of JB Keanes' Big Maggie - Well Done To All!
In its portrayal of a newly widowed woman who views her husband's death as a liberation, all pieties, social conventions and sentimentality are punctured. As Maggie seizes her opportunity to take absolute control of the family farm and business, she denies her four children their share, and drives each one in turn away.

Conor McLoughlin (TY) and Cathal McLoughlin (class of 2016) both represented Ireland at the International Canoe Polo competition held in Belgium in August of this year.
Conor & Cathal were both selected for the Irish under 21 teams.
Cathal was studying for this leaving cert and trained when he could, so it was a huge personal achievement for Cathal to get selected in his leaving cert year. Cathal plays in goals (known as sticks), his last game went to penalties after extra time, so was very tense, Cathal both saved and scored goals, earning the team a win in their final game. ![]()

...The chosen charity for this year’s 5th year fundraiser was Pieta house. As a group they decided to raise money for Pieta House. There is a growing awareness of the importance of mental health in society and people feel more able to seek help. Pieta House plays a vital role in aiding individuals and families who have been affected by suicide and depression. The 5th year students felt compelled to help this extremely influential charity in raising awareness on this important matter and raising essential funds for Pieta House.
Over a number of months the students raised €5000 for Pieta House meeting the original goal that they had set out to achieve. The students organised a variety of fundraising events in order to raise this invaluable amount such as bake sales, a Christmas Jumper Day, the infamous Student vs Teacher soccer match and the popular Action Concert. Funds raised from the very successful Liam Lawton Christmas Concert also went towards this cause.
Well done to the 5th year fundraising committee for all their hard work and dedication, members were;
Siofra McAullife, Stephen Duffy, Christopher Ryan, Robbie Walsh, Hannah Lee, Roisin Boyling, Katie Christanseen, Harry James, Kate Crowley, Emily Blake, Aoife Fiztgerald and Ciara Murphy. They could not have achieved their goal without the help of their Religion teaches, Mr Kavanagh, Ms Carden, Ms Mc Mahon and Mr Breslin and their Year Head, Mr Cahillane.
Avisited the school to give the students a talk about the work of Pieta House and to thank them for their generous donation. The committee would like to thank all the students and teachers who supported and donated to this worthy cause.

On Tuesday morning, we had an early but excitable start. The two buses were waiting at the school at the early time of 3am. We headed towards the airport, where we boarded the plane to Barcelona. When we arrived in Barcelona, the weather was sunny and warm. When we got on the bus and did some sightseeing, where we saw the Olympic Stadium, the Sagrada Família (a cathedral that has been in construction for over 200 years) and went on a cable car up a mountain. Then we had a long bus journey to our hotel in Salou, after we went to a magic show called The House Illusion. It was great fun!
On the second day we went to a monastery in Monserrat on the top of a beautiful mountain. It was all really interesting and the scenery was amazing. Later we got to go to Camp Nou where Barcelona play soccer and see the massive pitch and all the merchandise. Then we went back to our our hotel to get ready for dinner and then for bowling.
Day3
We woke up in the morning and went to Tarragona, where we saw gorgeous scenery and went for a bit of shopping. For lunch, we went back to our hotel and after we got into our best attire as this was our ‘fancy’ night. We went back to Barcelona and went to the outstanding science museum where we saw an amazing indoor rain forest and some other science inventions. Later we went for dinner to a Spanish restaurant for dinner and saw some traditional flamingo dancing. We had a delicious meal and a great evening. Then we had to go back to our hotel to pack our bags.
This year saw the eighth musical production in Scoil Mhuire Community School Clane. A cast of forty five first and second year students under the direction of Ms. Dunne and assisted by Mr. O Brien and Mr. Dempsey have worked tirelessly for months to produce Sister Act 2 - Back in the Habit, a vibrant, busy show offering all the students an opportunity to showcase their immense singing and dancing talent.
Over three nights the cast worked their magic to offer a highly polished and entertaining production to full houses. Watching the professionalism of the show it is easy to forget that these students are aged just 12-14. Well done to all the cast and crew and thank you to everyone who supported the show.
Many very happy memories were made for the cast during the production.

U14 Soccer - Scoil Mhuire Clane Vs Scoil Dara Kilcock
With our first two group games ending in a loss and a win , this was a game that was a must win in order to be in a driving position in order to get out of group A.
The boy’s professional attitude was flourishing with every game they played with some no nonsense preparation in getting ready and in the pre match warm up.
...U 14 Soccer Report – Away to Piper’s Hill 29th January
Our second game in our group was due to be played at home against Pipers Hill. With high levels of rain in the week leading up to the match, A quick decision was made on our pitch and the decision was made to switch the fixture to Pipers Hill’s astro. This was an easy decision to give up our home advantage as our team were well used to training on the fast astro pitch in our own school. We arrived at 10:00 all ready and togged out and got a good half hour warm up. With the starting 11 lined up we kicked off our second match at 10:30.

Clane were quick and moved well with every pass in the opening 10 minutes. Dean O’Shea in his attacking midfield role shot 3 times from long range in an effort to get on the score sheet. The team communicated with each other by enforcing the phrase “ don’t let them out “ which allowed Clane to press with high energy to regain possession. Our first goal came in 13 minutes when the ball was played out to Ryan Burke on the right followed by some silky one touch passes between Ger O’Connor, Daniel Piare, Dean O’Shea, Ryan and then back to Ger who hit the back of the net with a right footed finish into the left hand side of the goal. “ Probably the best goal I have seen live in front of me” was a comment from one of our 5th years.
Clane pushed on again into their opposition’s half. The 3 man midfield of Dan Piare, Ciaran Kerrigan and Dean O’Shea were passing the ball in dominant passing triangles and all were influential in the way Clane were playing. Trying to double their lead , chances fell to Ryan Burke who took on 3 players in the box only to be denied from a defender on the line. Another chance came to Gavin Reilly who took a shot from a wide left position. Ciaran Kerrigan was excellent in his tackling in midfield along with some clean neat foot work , while Dan Piare’s runs forward and through balls were causing trouble for the Piper’s Hill defense.
...On Friday Jan 22nd 2016, Scoil Mhuire Clane past student Rachel Mulqueen was back in the school to be presented with a medal from the Technology Teachers Association for the wonderful achievement of scoring the best female result in the country in Design and Communication Graphics in Leaving Certificate 2015.
The U14 Boys Soccer team played their first match on Monday the 18th January against CBS Naas. The boys have been working very hard since October in preparation for the group’s games this year.
The game was highly competitive for the full 60 minutes. Dean O’Shea scored the first goal from a stunning finish off a through ball from Gavin Reilly. The finish was slotted in to the left hand corner as he ran alongside CBS’ strong center half.
The Scoil Mhuire side was outstanding in the first half in every part of the pitch with some fantastic one touch passing and strong attacking line. A lively supporters line acted as the 12th Man as Clane were playing with confidence. CBS got the equalizer 1 minute before the whistle from a header in the box by Oisin Hand (CBS) .
In the second half the next goal came from Alex Rogers (CBS) with a mistake from our defense to allow CBS to tap in a goal from a half of a meter out. Clane pushed for their equalizer again in an exciting attacking play from Dean , Gavin, Ryan Burke and Ger O’Connor. CBS got the next goal in a controversial penalty decision, which our player seemed to get the ball from a normal standing tackle. Matthew Geoghegan (CBS) converted the penalty to make it 3-1.
On a Clear fresh morning the U15 Soccer team were all togged out in a momentous occasion over in Newbridge Town’s Astro Pitch. This final was the result of hard work and determination from a series of matches that started with the group stages back in October. We had previously played against Portlaoise where we had beaten them 3-0 on our Home Pitch. Portlaois walked away disappointed that day, having a strong squad where their chances weren’t converted. Straight away we had the mental upper hand , having beaten them once, sure why couldn’t we do it again.
With the Warm-up completed, the Jerseys on , and our 50 fans on the side-line , the boys lined up as a squad of 11 , hoping this match wouldn’t be their last.
Both Teams were cautious in their approach with the game, trying to get used to the fast wide pitch on the Astro. Clane were moving the ball confidently and looked the more dangerous of the two sides in the opening 20 minutes. The Portlaoise keeper looked a bit shaky , spilling a couple of catches which caused a couple of scrambles on the box for the much needed first goal. Carl James and Adam Byrne were timing their runs off the strikers well. Finn Gillispe and Eoin Carolan were creating some clever through balls to each other only to be closed down by the strong Portlaoise defence.

The wearing and storage of school coats remains problematic. As the school do not have the space for larger lockers, they have installed coat racks in the locker areas to help address this issue. Please ensure that each student has their name on their coat. In addition, an individualised mark on the coat can be helpful in differentiating coats.

Thank you to our outgoing prefects who represented the school excellently all year and welcome to our new team for 2014-15, Paul Alenkhe, Head Prefect, Alex Cribbin, Deputy Head and 5th Yr. Prefect, Ian Prendergast, Amy Keegan and Keisha Davies, 1st Yr. Prefects, Niamh Crofton, 2nd Yr. Prefect, Adam Flynn, 3rd Yr. Prefect, Ronan Guilfoyle and Clodagh Kelly, Sports Prefects, and Leona Condron, Arts and Culture Prefect.
For the first time, our third year students did an Oral Exam as part of the Junior Certificate Irish exam. Over one hundred students took the oral exam over four days. It included discussing a picture sequence, a role play and a conversation with an examiner. The students performed well and the examiner praised them for their hard work.
Scoil Mhuire's great debating tradition was upheld throughout the year.
The debating team entered the Aoife Begley Memorial debating competition in NUI Maynooth in December with four teams and two individuals. The standard was very high with students implementing dramatics and rebuttal into their 7 minute speeches. Alas the adjudicators, from the University's Literature and Debating Society, had to pick winners. One team and three individuals from Scoil Mhuire, progressed to the quarter finals- Nicole Martin, Ian Prendergast, Adam Dillon, Bébhinn Cogan and Rachel Mulqueen. Unfortunately only Adam, Bébhinn and Rachel proceeded to the semi-finals where they displayed their great oratory and research skills. However, Bébhinn was the only one to achieve a place in the final, which took place on May 6th, and provided the debaters a chance to show off their accumulated skills to the esteemed adjudicators. Unfortunately Bébhinn did not win the title but was delighted to have gotten so far in the competition.
A Scoil Mhuire team of Molly Kelly, Bébhinn Cogan and Emily O'Brien were also given the wonderful opportunity to represent Denmark in the Model European Commission in Dublin Castle. Great credit is due to the debating team, under the sound guidance of Mr. Behan, for their many achievements and fine words.
The Annual Student Award Cermanies for 2014 were held in May in Scoil Mhuire Clane. Awards were presented in many categories including academic, sports, personal development, merits, performance arts and drama.
Special guests included Hall of Fame Award Winner past student and Aide de Camp Cmmdt. Louise Conlon, and Dublin Footballer Ger Brennan.

U13 Boys Soccer
Scoil Mhuire U13 boys soccer team played their Leinster Midlands Final against Athy in Newbridge on the 12th March.
The game didn't start the way Scoil Mhuire wanted. They were being put under pressure from the start by Athy. Not long into the first half, Athy won a penalty and it only just beat Keeper Kian Cleary at full stretch. Mid-way through the second half, the game became an end to end affair with both teams having chances to take the lead. Clane ended the half on top though and showed encouraging signs for the second half. Scoil Mhuire started the second half well and before they knew it, the score was level thanks to a Shane O' Conner goal. A second goal for Clane soon followed with James Behan scoring a well worked goal to put Scoil Mhuire ahead. Good defending lead by captain Conor Walsh kept Clane ahead for the rest of the game and Scoil Mhuire, managed by Mr Kavanagh, Mr Sheridan and Mr. Doherty with coaches Adam Dillon and Andy Watson won the U13 Boys Leinster Midlands Trophy for the third time, the second time in two years. The U13 Boys Leinster Quarter Final was in Tullamore on the 27th of March against Tullamore. Tullamore, a big, physical side started well in the match and were two goals up inside ten minutes of this match. Scoil Mhuire kept their cool however, and replied with a goal from Eoin Walsh that was well taken. Tullamore scored another goal to make it 3-1 at half time.

On Wed March 4th Scoil Mhuire Senior Ladies football team travelled to Mullingar to take on Tullamore Community School in the Leinster Ladies Championship. They made history by being the first Ladies football team to bring home a cup to Scoil Mhuire.
Clane, captained by Sinead Corbett, began well when Sarah Cribbin (later named player of the match) got the opening point. Tullamore soon responded with 2 goals and a point. This was a wake up for Clane who began slowly but surely to claw back with some steady score from Rachel Reidy and Ciara Egan. At half time we were 4 points up on a score of 2-5 to 2-1.
Clane knew if they wanted a win they had a fight on their hands as Tullamore opened the second half with a smashing goal. The exchange of scores began and Scoil Mhuire scored two quick goals. Some excellent football followed but the final score of 5-8 to 3-4 meant Scoil Mhuire were crowned Leinster Champions and travelled home to a reception in the Adult Education area sponsored by trainer Mr. Scully and his management team of Mr Kavanagh and Ms Carden. Well done to all the team on a wonderful championship and great win.

Last year a group of teachers and students decided to set up a school Library. There was a huge response to an appeal for donations of unwanted books, with just over 3000 books being donated. A room in the school has now been allocated for use as a library and it is now open to the students.
Students who join the school library will automatically become members of the Kildare Library Arts & Services. Membership cards can be used in the school library and also in local and county libraries. If a student requests a book that we don’t have in the school library, they can simply go to their nearest public library in Co. Kildare and it can be ordered in from another branch. At present we have a limited number of books relating to Sports, Art, Health and Well-being and we would be delighted to receive any books in good condition on these topics. We are also appealing for novels in Irish, French, German and Polish. The library facility is a great new addition to the school and we hope that students will take full advantage of the service.
Over 50 students participate in the Gaisce Awards Programme
The President’s Award is Ireland’s National Challenge Award for young people. Gaisce works on the basis of a personal challenge set by the young person. We have over 50 pupils currently doing their Bronze award and 2 doing their Silver. On Thursday 5th December the Leinster Silver Award Presentation Ceremony took place in the Edmund Burke Theatre, Trinity
College. Professor Aideen Long, Dean of Graduate Studies in Trinity, presented silver awards to Brendan Dowling and Ciaran Wyse who are now going on to do the Gold award. We wish all students taking part every success.
On Sunday 15th December Fr Paul O'Boyle celebrated Gaudete Sunday, and was joined by pupils, staff and friends from Scoil Mhuire Community School in Clane, in the studio. With musical director Brian Shanahan and Sarah Nevin leading the school choir.
The RTE TV cameras were in the school to capture footage of the daily activities in the school. This was broadcast before the live mass. Click here or on image above to view the service on the RTE Player
The Scoil Mhuire Senior Football Team went on two day trips to Kippure Estate Adventure Centre in Co. Wicklow, where the team took part in team bonding activities.
On the first day the team did the high ropes challenge which included tasks such as climbing wall, vertical challenge, leap of faith and other challenges which required the team to communicate and work well as a team to complete.
On the second day the team took part in an uphill timed endurance mountain run. This challenge involved the 3 groups running to the peak of the mountain in the fastest time they could while having to work as a team to solve puzzles on the way.

The Shoe Box Appeal for Team Hope was an outstanding success this year with 149 boxes collected. The campaign, promoted by the parish council, was spearheaded by student council members who organised the collection through the tutor groups. As a result of their efforts and the generosity of the students, 149 children will be opening their gift boxes in time for Christmas. Well done and a huge thank you to everyone involved.
" The Student Council will be collecting Shoe boxes for the Christmas Shoe box appeal. We will be collecting boxes up until 11th of November. Every year Scoil Mhuire collects one third of all the Shoe boxes collected in the parish (something the school is very proud of). One year the Student Council managed to collect 180 boxes , last year we managed to only collect 67 which isn't great considering there is over 1000 students in the school, so we are hoping to do better this year. So if you can could you please bring in a full complete shoebox with €5 (for shipping) , a shoe box , toys ( no toy weapons) , sweets (no chocolate) , socks , hats , pencils , copies etc. Or if you wish you can just donate €10 and we will fill a box on your behalf ."
Thanks
Student Council
THE sky's the limit for Sarah Beegan (14) from Clane. Since May, the second year student in School Mhuire has sold more than 200 bespoke greetings cards, and will be exporting her first order soon to the Isle of Man. Read Full Liffey Champion Article,
Sarah’s success started earlier this year when a business teacher encouraged her to enter the County Enterprise Board competition. She makes all the cards herself, after discovering her talent when her mother got cancer and they started making cards together at home. In preparation for the contest she chose to stock her work in Bob & Kate’s Giftshop in Clane, which was recently shortlisted in The Irish Times’ ‘Best Shop in Ireland 2013’ awards.
Sarah’s unique designs are made with ribbons, pearls, flowers, glitter, die-cut paper, and Sarah uses professional markers to colour them before applying a special glaze “to stop the design smudging”.
