a1sx2_Thumbnail1_IMG_70631-Medium.JPGCliodhna Lee, a Third Year student in Scoil Mhuire Clane triumphed at the Matheson Junior Debate National Mace’s ‘The Speech’ competition in St. Conleth’s College in Ballsbridge on Saturday 21st April.  Out of five finalists from all over Ireland, Cliodhna received the ‘Overall Best Speech’ award. Cliodhna performed and filmed her own rendition of Emma Watson’s ‘HeForShe’ speech with the help of her teacher Ms. Lynch and her peers in the Junior Debate club.

The chosen speech deals with the topic of gender inequality; something Cliodhna deems as relevant in society today and something she hopes “will no longer be an issue in our world”.  The Judging panel remarked how “she made it her own” and “delivered a speech of great importance” at Saturday’s award ceremony.

This result has instilled great confidence and pride within Cliodhna and all at Scoil Mhuire, with principal Padraig Nolan describing the win as a “fantastic achievement” and what looks like “a bright future in the world of debate in Scoil Mhuire”.

For the past few years Scoil Mhuire Community School under their teacher Sinead Cullen have entered Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture with great success. This year however they have reached dazzling heights, with Dragon Sceal winning the East Region in the Grand Final in the 3Arena on April 19th.

The competition challenges students to create a wearable outfit from entirely recycled materials. This experimentation and design process is completely new to these students and the outfits produced this year are jaw dropping. There were 8 outfits submitted from Scoil Mhuire C.S. this year. Three outfits; Dragon Sceal, Try Stop Us and The High Road successfully progressed to the Regional Final and showcased their outfits on the catwalk in March in The Helix, Dublin. This was a fantastic night and the students put on an amazing show. Dragon Sceal was chosen as one of the finalists lucky enough to proceed to the Grand Final in the 3Arena.

b2ap3_thumbnail_moving_up_cover.jpgEvery year, more than 50,000 young people in Ireland move from primary to post-primary education. What helps them to settle into their new school? What enables them to do well? To find answers to these questions, researchers from the Economic and Social Research Institute began a study of over 900 students in their first three years of post-primary school. The story of their first year is now complete.
This booklet summarises the main findings of the research and suggests ways in which schools and teachers can support students during this important time in their education. It also provides useful information for parents whose children have just begun, or are about to begin, post-primary school.

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s) and incoming First Years

We would like to extend a warm welcome to all the students who will begin their secondary school journey at Scoil Mhuire this Friday. The transition from primary to secondary school is a big one, and there may be some nerves or uncertainty. This is all completely natural, and we have no doubt that after a few days, all students will have settled in. To aid in the transition, each student will have a Sixth Year mentor, who will provide advice and support.

We look forward to seeing all students on Friday morning.

Remember there is no need to bring any textbooks, just a pen and notepad.

a1sx2_Thumbnail1_Gift_Homeless_2017.jpgThe Religion department continues to foster and encourage an active awareness of social justice in Sixth Year. The day Fr Peter McVerry visited generated an immense impact on the majority of our students. The impact was so strong that the group decided that they should give something back. It was decided that the students would be asked to contribute towards helping some homeless people to pay for a hostel for a few nights around Christmas. The cost per night is about €5, a total of €550 was collected. It was then agreed to put some money into Christmas cards to be given to some homeless. We are so lucky to have a very talented card designer in our group. Sarah Beegan indicated that she was willing to make homemade cards instead of those mass produced. Regardless of the amount of work involved it was decided that it would be much more personal to make our own. Sarah donated all the materials and a production line was established to manufacture a large amount of cards. Each card had a hand written message from our year group.

On the 20th December a representative group travelled to Dublin. The students were Harry Kelly, Colm O’Sullivan, Emily Kinsella, Eva O’Connell, Muireann Healy, Stephen Duffy, Sarah Beegan and Robbie Walsh. After an inspiring talk Fr. McVerry brought us to the Youth Café on Berkeley Street. There was a Christmas themed morning open to any homeless person to drop in and have breakfast, warmth and company. We spoke to many homeless people as the students presented them with the cards. The level of appreciation shown by these people will live long in our memories. The school community were so proud of the happiness that all our Sixth Year students brought to these people, even if only for a brief time. Well done to all!

Congratulations to Holly Newman who is a finalist in this years Doodle for Google National Competition!
This year’s Doodle 4 Google competition is very special, the winning doodle will feature on the Google Ireland homepage for 24 hours in April. Millions of people will have the opportunity to see it, and understand what creativity & innovation means to all of our young artists today. This year’s theme is.... If I could create anything it would be.... Please click on the 'Vote For Holly' button below and vote for Holly.

I love space. I think it's fascinating and beautiful, but the sheer size and vastness of space terrifies me. But I thought, what if I could shrink space? I decided that, if I could create anything, it would be a tiny Galaxy all to myself.

In its portrayal of a newly widowed woman who views her husband's death as a liberation, all pieties, social conventions and sentimentality are punctured. As Maggie seizes her opportunity to take absolute control of the family farm and business, she denies her four children their share, and drives each one in turn away.

As the school year 2015/2016 draws to a close we reflect on the many outings, workshops, overseas trips, cultural experiences and information sessions enjoyed by our Transition Year students. This year afforded students a unique opportunity to involve themselves in a vast array of disciplines some familiar, others new. We trust that they have gained valuable insight and can now make mature informed decisions on numerous areas of interest.

a1sx2_Thumbnail1_IMG_1353-1.JPGThe chosen charity for this year’s 5th year fundraiser was Pieta house. As a group they decided to raise money for Pieta House. There is a growing awareness of the importance of mental health in society and people feel more able to seek help. Pieta House plays a vital role in aiding individuals and families who have been affected by suicide and depression. The 5th year students felt compelled to help this extremely influential charity in raising awareness on this important matter and raising essential funds for Pieta House.

Over a number of months the students raised €5000 for Pieta House meeting the original goal that they had set out to achieve. The students organised a variety of fundraising events in order to raise this invaluable amount such as bake sales, a Christmas Jumper Day, the infamous Student vs Teacher soccer match and the popular Action Concert. Funds raised from the very successful Liam Lawton Christmas Concert also went towards this cause.

Well done to the 5th year fundraising committee for all their hard work and dedication, members were;
Siofra McAullife, Stephen Duffy, Christopher Ryan, Robbie Walsh, Hannah Lee, Roisin Boyling, Katie Christanseen, Harry James, Kate Crowley, Emily Blake, Aoife Fiztgerald and Ciara Murphy. They could not have achieved their goal without the help of their Religion teaches, Mr Kavanagh, Ms Carden, Ms Mc Mahon and Mr Breslin and their Year Head, Mr Cahillane.

Avisited the school to give the students a talk about the work of Pieta House and to thank them for their generous donation. The committee would like to thank all the students and teachers who supported and donated to this worthy cause.

Day1

On Tuesday morning, we had an early but excitable start. The two buses were waiting at the school at the early time of 3am. We headed towards the airport, where we boarded the plane to Barcelona. When we arrived in Barcelona, the weather was sunny and warm. When we got on the bus and did some sightseeing, where we saw the Olympic Stadium, the Sagrada Família (a cathedral that has been in construction for over 200 years) and went on a cable car up a mountain. Then we had a long bus journey to our hotel in Salou, after we went to a magic show called The House Illusion. It was great fun!

Day2

On the second day we went to a monastery in Monserrat on the top of a beautiful mountain. It was all really interesting and the scenery was amazing. Later we got to go to Camp Nou where Barcelona play soccer and see the massive pitch and all the merchandise. Then we went back to our our hotel to get ready for dinner and then for bowling.
Day3
We woke up in the morning and went to Tarragona, where we saw gorgeous scenery and went for a bit of shopping. For lunch, we went back to our hotel and after we got into our best attire as this was our ‘fancy’ night. We went back to Barcelona and went to the outstanding science museum where we saw an amazing indoor rain forest and some other science inventions. Later we went for dinner to a Spanish restaurant for dinner and saw some traditional flamingo dancing. We had a delicious meal and a great evening. Then we had to go back to our hotel to pack our bags.

Over three nights the cast worked their magic to offer a highly polished and entertaining production to full houses. Watching the professionalism of the show it is easy to forget that these students are aged just 12-14. Well done to all the cast and crew and thank you to everyone who supported the show.

Many very happy memories were made for the cast during the production.

U 14 Soccer Report – Away to Piper’s Hill 29th January

a1sx2_u14smcsclane0216_u14_smcs_v_pipers_hill.JPGOur second game in our group was due to be played at home against Pipers Hill. With high levels of rain in the week leading up to the match,  A quick decision was made on our pitch and the decision was made to switch the fixture to Pipers Hill’s astro. This was an easy decision to give up our home advantage as our team were well used to training on the fast astro pitch in our own school. We arrived at 10:00 all ready and togged out and got a good half hour warm up. With the starting 11 lined up we kicked off our second match at 10:30.
Click to view match day photo gallery

Clane were quick and moved well with every pass in the opening 10 minutes. Dean O’Shea in his attacking midfield role shot 3 times from long range in an effort to get on the score sheet. The team communicated with each other by enforcing the phrase “ don’t let them out “ which allowed Clane to press with high energy to regain possession. Our first goal came in 13 minutes when the ball was played out to Ryan Burke on the right followed by some silky one touch passes between Ger O’Connor, Daniel Piare, Dean O’Shea, Ryan and then back to Ger who hit the back of the net with a right footed finish into the left hand side of the goal. “ Probably the best goal I have seen live in front of me” was a comment from one of our 5th years.

Clane pushed on again into their opposition’s half.  The 3 man midfield of Dan Piare, Ciaran Kerrigan and Dean O’Shea were passing the ball in dominant passing triangles and all were influential in the way Clane were playing. Trying to double their lead , chances fell to Ryan Burke who took on 3 players in the box only to be denied from a defender on the line. Another chance came to Gavin Reilly who took a shot from a wide left position. Ciaran Kerrigan was excellent in his tackling in midfield along with some clean neat foot work , while Dan Piare’s runs forward and through balls were causing trouble for the Piper’s Hill defense.

Scoil Mhuire v CBS Naas

a1sx2_U14Team_DSC_0150.JPGThe U14 Boys Soccer team played their first match on Monday the 18th January against CBS Naas. The boys have been working very hard since October in preparation for the group’s games this year.

The game was highly competitive for the full 60 minutes. Dean O’Shea scored the first goal from a stunning finish off a through ball from Gavin Reilly. The finish was slotted in to the left hand corner as he ran alongside CBS’ strong center half.

The Scoil Mhuire side was outstanding in the first half in every part of the pitch with some fantastic one touch passing and strong attacking line. A lively supporters line acted as the 12th Man as Clane were playing with confidence. CBS got the equalizer 1 minute before the whistle from a header in the box by Oisin Hand (CBS) .

In the second half the next goal came from Alex Rogers (CBS) with a mistake from our defense to allow CBS to tap in a goal from a half of a meter out. Clane pushed for their equalizer again in an exciting attacking play from Dean , Gavin, Ryan Burke and Ger O’Connor. CBS got the next goal in a controversial penalty decision, which our player seemed to get the ball from a normal standing tackle. Matthew Geoghegan (CBS) converted the penalty to make it 3-1. a1sx2_U14_DSC_0186.JPG

U15 Soccer Final

a1sx2_U15Team_DSC_0294---Copy---Copy.JPG

On a Clear fresh morning the U15 Soccer team were all togged out in a momentous occasion over in Newbridge Town’s  Astro Pitch. This final was the result of hard work and determination from a series of matches that started with the group stages back in October. We had previously played against Portlaoise where we had beaten them 3-0 on our Home Pitch. Portlaois walked away disappointed that day, having a strong squad where their chances weren’t converted. Straight away we had the mental upper hand , having beaten them once, sure why couldn’t we do it again.

With the Warm-up completed, the Jerseys on , and our 50 fans on the side-line , the boys lined up as a squad of 11 , hoping this match wouldn’t be their last.

Both Teams were cautious in their approach with the game, trying to get used to the fast wide pitch on the Astro. Clane were moving the ball confidently and looked the more dangerous of the two sides in the opening 20 minutes. The Portlaoise keeper looked a bit shaky , spilling a couple of catches which caused a couple of scrambles on the box for the much needed first goal. Carl James and Adam Byrne were timing their runs off the strikers well. Finn Gillispe and Eoin Carolan were creating some clever through balls to each other only to be closed down by the strong Portlaoise defence.

Congratulations to Emer Martin, Ciara Murphy and Katie Christanseen , Transition Year students who have been chosen from 958 entries to go forward on April 24th to the National final of the JUNK KOUTURE competition in the 3Arena. They are among 80 finalists from around the country.

The girls were one of four entries from Scoil Mhuire who took part in the Regional competition in the Helix last Friday and were very well supported by Scoil Mhuire students.

Other regional finalists were Jean Gill Pollock, Emma Reilly, Sarah Harkin, Brianna Byrne, Claudia Nevin, Sophie Murphy, Emily Kinsella and Sophie Callanan. The models performed most professionally during the catwalk show. Well done girls.

The entry chosen to proceed to the final is FRESH ‘N FAMOUS. The outfit recycles flour, Brennans Bread wrappers and Sellotape rolls. The girls used the flour with salt and water which they  baked and cut into shapes. After much experimenting with shapes and designs the girls, assisted and guided by Art teacher, Ms McGee settled on the final design which was inspired by Madonna and fifties fashion was modelled by Emer on the night.. The girls have put huge time and effort into the competition and feel it was all worth it. We eagerly await the finals and wish the girls and Ms McGee the best of luck .

Our Art Students qualified for the Eastern Regional Finals of the Junk Kouture Fashion Competition.

AGM:

There was a large attendance at the AGM in October and the guest speaker John Lonergan provided an excellent and thought provoking talk on parenting.

The Parent’s Association committee

The Parent’s Association committee for 14/15 has been formed. We would like to thank everyone involved last year and we welcome the new members. A list of committee members and the year their child is in will be posted on the School website shortly. John Kevin Flynn has kindly agreed to remain as chairperson for the coming year.

Lockers/coats:

The wearing and storage of school coats remains problematic. As the school do not have the space for larger lockers, they have installed coat racks in the locker areas to help address this issue. Please ensure that each student has their name on their coat. In addition, an individualised mark on the coat can be helpful in differentiating coats.
